Equinox 2017 - Wargaming Tournament.

Equinox has concluded for another year and Wargaming had a great resurgence up here in Auckland. Numbers have started coming back into the hobby nationally. This was demonstrated with 40 at the 40k tournament alone at Equinox, all mostly of North Islanders. Lets get more South Islanders up to compete and we should hit some massive numbers! We have the venues and the gear to handle a lot more gamers, so spread the word about how fun the Hobby is fellow Wargamers and lets really get the community churning with excitement.

A big thanks needs to go to the competitors for supporting the tournament in it's 8th year. Also a big pat on the back to the first time T.O's and Umpires who volunteered to help run the events on the weekend. Those of you who are wanting to be more involved in officiating, get in touch because we need you. There's MonsterCon and GuardCon coming in the next few months and they all need help if you are interested.

Equinox this year had four main systems that were hosted, 'Warhammer 40K', '9th Age: Fantasy Battle', 'Age of Sigmar' and 'Flames of War'. All of the systems had a good attendance, keeping Equinox one of the Largest tournaments held in Auckland again this year. Plenty of thanks needs to go to our sponsors for helping us put on the big show. Go support them as they are supporting your community events.

Warhammer 40K:

Some great new recent releases has brought 40kers back to the tournament scene. Our prize structure always encourages all levels of gamers to enjoy their hobby. This year we had a strong Auckland attendance and travelers from the Australia and the South Island competing. With the huge mix of new hobbyists this year, the game is really enjoying a revival. Your continued support of the tournament scene will see it help with more and more updated tournament terrain. The tables are really starting to look better and better with the new GW terrain you can enjoy your games on.

The 9th Age: Fantasy Battle

If you played Warhammer Fantasy 8th ed, then 9th is the natural progression of the game for many. 9th Age is a Free ruleset, with 16 Armies that you can use to fight your tabletop battles. From my last look it had attracted 250,000+ downloads of the rules. That's a solid player base around the world that gives this system the thumbs up. The European Team Championship this year will be mainstreaming 9th Age: Fantasy Battle and will again Attract the 500+ for the tournament by estimates.
9th Age is a fledgling game system in NZ and with dedicated hobbyists, you'll see it played in your region soon. Give it a go and you'll see why it's the awesome game that it is. At Equinox it attracted a ever building field and a wide range of armies. Even though the Elven forces are favoured amongst the field they aren't necessarily the dominant force that everyone expected. Equinox qualifies for 'NZ Invitationals' ranking points.

Age of Sigmar

AoS has come a long way with the release of the 'Generals handbook'. This has made a fantastic tournament environment developing around the world. With its novel way that you can start collecting and playing competitively quickly it's picked up a very large player base here and abroad. We've just added AoS as one of the systems offered for Equinox and we expect it to pick up momentum quick. Games Workshop keeps on bringing out amazing kits in their miniature range. If you're a collector or a competitive General, 'Age of Sigmar' is the game system you should have a look into.
Definitely sporting some fantastic looking armies amongst the field. It was great to see all the friendly players willing to encourage new players into the fold. You can get a demo game in local Clubs and Stores near you.
